How to help a 6–7 year old with detective logic puzzles

Read the clues like a detective and use the grid to work out who has what. Logic grid puzzles teach children to reason step by step and to rule things out. At this age they mainly build deduction, reading carefully and ruling out.

Teach the grid: a tick for yes, a cross for no. Once one row has a tick, the rest of that row gets crosses.

Ten minutes a day is plenty. Stop while it is still fun, and praise the effort (“you kept going after that dead end”) more than the speed.

Questions parents ask

What is a logic grid puzzle?

A short mystery with clues and a grid. Children mark what must be true and what cannot be true until only one answer is left.

What age can start logic puzzles?

With help, 5 and 6 year olds can do small cases. Most 8 year olds can solve them alone.

Is there only one answer?

Yes. Each case is checked by computer to have exactly one solution, shown in the answer key.
