How to help a 6–7 year old with word searches

Word searches build sharp eyes and spelling. Our themed grids grow with your child: words go across and down at first, then diagonally and backwards. At this age they mainly build visual scanning, spelling and focus.

Ask your child to read each word aloud before they search. Diagonal words appear at this level, so show them how to slide a finger along the line.

Ten minutes a day is plenty. Stop while it is still fun, and praise the effort (“you kept going after that dead end”) more than the speed.

Questions parents ask

Are word searches good for learning?

They practise spelling, letter patterns and focus. Themed lists (animals, space, food) also build vocabulary.

Which word search suits a 5 year old?

Our Level 1 grids use short words that go only across or down, which suits most 4 and 5 year olds.

Do they come with answers?

Yes. Each word search has an answer key with every word circled.
